I did not have Times New Roman on my Mandrake Linux 9.1 to start with. I used fontdrake to import all my windoze fonts (I have a dual boot machine) and then things got much nicer. Other distros have similar tools for importing fonts that you might want to look into.

But I was using Times New Roman in the email (which I wrote in MS Word), as I do in all. What could be a more ubiquitous font? I have no clue as to why those characters appeared, for I did not select them.
