Hi Pete:
Couldn't figure out how to answer your reply on the OOo forum so I went to your webpage and sent an e-mail to the webmaster and that bounced.
No biggie (as long as you call me Pete*r*! :) ), normally just replying to the list will get to everyone, that is usually the best course of action as some people don't get e-mail sent to them.
Anyways, back to your problem. Before we go any further, I just want to make sure you know I am just a person who likes to volunteer and help. I am not a paid professional or anything like that. I am only saying this, because we are not entering into areas that could be potentially riskey in your computer. I have been playing with computer since I was 12 (I am 25 now), but I am only a lowly HS Physics teacher, so just bear that in mind.
I was going to try your suggestion of deleting OOo but it is not listed in my Add/delete section of WinXP. I know it isn't a good idea to delete a directory but it seems that is my only alternative now unless you have a better idea.
I would imagine that the reference to OOo is no longer in your add/remove programs because you did the system restore. Since, it is not in your add/remove program list, I would say it would be okay to delete the directory.
In reality, it is not that big of a deal to just delete a directory and the program. The only real problem with it is that it leaves things behind, like a reference in your add/remove programs list. Then when you try to remove it, you can't. It can also leave behind extra drivers that only it needed, so this can waste disk space.
So, I would say delete the OOo directory.
I also can't find "My Computer" which seems to have disappeared.
It can be accessed through the start menu, and if you right click on it in the start menu, there should be an option that says /Show on Desktop/. If you click that, then it will return to your desktop.
I'm positive that OOo is causing my problem. I was able to get Thunderbird to run again by re-installing. I'm going to do the same with Firefox and Netscape. OOo also wiped out my modem and scanner which I was able to get running by a re-install.
Which version of OOo were you using?
I am a a little baffled as to how OOo could have affected you computer this way. I have never seen this. I have installed 10+ different versions of OOo and never experience this. Weird.
Not to say it didn't happen, just strange.
I downloaded OOo on my son's computer because he has cable and it only took 3 minutes. I put it on a CD and took it home and installed it on my computer. Do you think this could have caused a problem ??
No, I don't think that would matter. As long as the download was valid, it shouldn't have mattered.
It seems like it installed OK. I also found it strange that OOot didn't put a short-cut on my desk top or in my Start-up list.
OOo doesn't put icons on the desktop, although there should have been something in the start menu. It sounds like something went wrong during the installation. I don't know what though.
Thanks for taking time to answer my questions and I hope you can think of how I can safely delete OOo.
No problem. Deleting that directory would probably be the safest course of action now.
I would also probably run some sort of registry cleaner, just to remove any extraneous OOo references, or references from other programs. I use registry cleaner, it is a Microsoft product, so it shouldn't do any harm. Your download it here: <http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=lst-0-4>
I would also encourage you to try and install OOo again, although not from the same download you have now. You can either download from the OOo website, or you may want to check out TheOpenCd. It is a collection of Open Source programs, including OOo. You download a CD image at <http://www.theopencd.org/> and burn that to a CD and install all of the software from there. That may make the OOo installation go more smoothly.
Hopefully this will help a little bit. I am copying my response to the list, in case someone more knowledgeable can help out also. Feel free to let me know if you need more help.
