I am only using Access because I know it, having learned it during my Uni course. I would prefer to use a non-M$ application if I can. Are there any tutorials about MySQL or other free source applications on the Internet, and is it hard to learn, given that I have already studied database theory in general and Access and Oracle?
OOo 2.0 (Beta expected shortly) includes Base, an Access-like application ... You might want to consider switching to that?

Extra reg. Base:
Jacket Potato Inc. is a sample database created using OpenOffice.org Base. It uses the HSQL embedded database engine. The purpose of Jacket Potato Inc. is to provide a usable sample database and demonstrate OOo Base’s basic capabilities.
Jacket Potato Inc. is released under LGPL and is available from: http://nothickmanuals.info/doku.php?id=jacketpotato
Justin Clift has recently created three tutorials to get you started with OOo Base, see:
