we also have problems with Open office opening other files such as Word files then cause conflict.
When you installed OOo you asked that OOo should become the default application to open MS Office documents, by checking / ticking the option which appears during the install process. Agreed, for inexperienced users, the wording of that option is not as clear as it could be. Looking at your message header you appear to be using some flavour of the Windows OS, in which case it is a simple although inconvenient process to change the file associations back to MS Office. Find an MS Office file (eg. .doc) right click on it, choose the "Open With..." option and select MS Word from the list. Repeat for xls, ppt, etc.
When I download most fil;e from the net, just like one to be opend in
Word via adobe, it is opened in Open office not Word, I assume it is
set to some kind of default but it is ausing problems for me.
Again, I don't understand what you mean "Word via Adobe". There is no interrelationship between these 2 applications.
My wife cannot send reports to other people created because they can

Yes it is extremely unfortunate that Microsoft is such an arrogant organisation that they refuse to provide their users with the facility to read file formats other than those that they dictate.
You wife's solution is simple. When she saves a file which is to be read by MS Office users, she should use the "Save As" option and select the appropriate MS Office format from the "File Type" drop down list.

Regarding the Word issues I meant we use MS-Word as the document file, really because of the issues we were encountering, with office.
My son and you seem to compliment each other regarding Microsoft, judging by your one remark about them MS. He installed the office program in the beginning on my computer, but then I needed Word for other files I had made on my other computer.
