OOo needs a minimum of v1.4.1_01 java. I believe that the latest java download will update your existing installation. It wouldn't hurt to uninstall the old version, though.

hI,
THANKS FOR YOUR MESSAGE. ONE THING THAT WORRIES ME A BIT IS THAT I HAVE ONE VERSION (?) OF JAVA ALREADY, WHICH I DOWNLOADED WHEN I HAD A SPELL OF USING OPERA, NOW ABANDONED IN FAVOLUR MOZILLA FIREFOX. WHATEVER THE VERSION IS, IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OOO AS THEY KEEP ASKING FOR JRE. SHOULD I DELETE THIS EARLIER VERSION BEFORE DOWNLOADING FROM SUN ???

Hi Nick,
No need to address your questions to any specific person. There are thousands of volunteers on this list, most of whom know more than I do.
To get java installed go to:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
You can copy the line above and paste it into your browser's address bar.
I believe there are concise instructions there on which download to choose and what to do with it. Once you've finished the install, browse to the directory where Open office is installed (on my pc it's "D:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.1.4\program) and find the program "jvmsetup.exe". Run that to register the new java install with open office. You should see a 'Java setup' dialogue and the version of java that you just installed should be selected already. Just click OK and you're done.
