This may be a bug. I cannot edit fields in Base either - and my table is
a simple local .csv text file. It needs someone who knows what Base is
supposed to do or not to do to give us a clue on this. Or perhaps we
have to get the spec for Base and read that.

The flat file driver is read only, as is the Calc driver, and the dBase
driver. I am not certain about using an external hsqldb database.... I
would have expected that to NOT be read only.
