I'd do that very willingly, however I don't have the capabilities to
enable my reserved web space with my DSL provider ;( (with so many kids
around sending worms, virus and similar stuff I need managing security
firewalls first) [But see below]

It's not me but Calc that selects the Tab delimited item when showing
the dialog box ... ;)

That assumption is not valid: I checked that the same happens with Lotus ME!

I tried "merge delimiters": it gets columns right (in the sense that
they become 'real' cells, not rows) but the cell contents is no longer
aligned. Let me explain better with a short example (where each point
represents a space):
File.txt:
First line ends here.........***..10,15..-0,15..12,30..Mar 17 05..
Second line .................***.200,02..+1,30..33,50..Mar 17 05..
will appear in Calc:
First line ends here.........***..10,15..-0,15..12,30..Mar 17 05..
Second line....***.200,02..+1,30..33,50..Mar 17 05..
BTW, at this point it's only an 'academic' discussion, hoping it helps
getting a better response from OOo-Calc. AAMOF I did manage to avoid
that 'treating' the original text with a script that sets things right
inserting a 'pipe' (|) delimiter

Ennio
