Hi,
Question 1:
When I draw a text box in a Writer document, I can't seem to be able to place a field inside the box instead of typed text.
More specifically: I want my header to be just a line with the page number 'cutting' that line right in the middle. something like that ---- 4 ----- but with a line instead of dashes (I do the line with a paragraph border -because I need some text on top of that line- and insert a text box in the middle, but I can't put a page number field in that text box...).
Working with OOo 1.1.4.
This was a frustration for me a while back, too. It is not possible to insert a field in a text drawing object.
Here's a possible way to work around your dilemma. Insert->Header->Default, to open the header on your page. Insert the page number field in it.
Open the Stylist and right-click on Header style, select Modify, then change the paragraph alignment to center, if you want that, and close the dialog.
From the left-side toolbar, fourth icon from top, long-click, select Line (2nd icon). Draw a line segment in the header of the length you need for each side of the page number. Right-click on the line segment, change the Anchor to As Character. Drag the line segment to the left side of your page number field, then insert a space between it and the number, and a space after the number. Select the line segment, ctrl-c (copy), then paste a copy of it (ctrl-v). Drag the copy to the right of the page number, and position the line segments mid-line to the number. Voila! Works in both 1.1.4 and 2.0 beta and newer (1.9.87, e.g.).

Ps: I enjoy and learn with every message on this thread!! Thanks to all that take the time to reply.
