Brian,

It looks like you have had your questions concerning file association
answered.

Congratulations for choosing OOo for this task.  I would recommend
staying away from Microsoft Word 2000 (or any other Microsoft format)
since they are proprietary formats.  The university will be much better
off if open formats, like OpenOffice.org, is used.
