According to a recent thread on discuss, OOo2 requires java for
several, function-critical components (i.e., writer wizards). While
OOo1, without java, was fully functional except for some esoteric
functions, OOo2 seems to really need it.

OTOH, there's significant progress in getting the desired
functionality going with GCJ (thanks to the RedHat people) so OOo2 may
be a strict open source tool again soon.
