I don't get this on 1.1.3 running on Mandrake 10.1

But I tend to use styles consistently in almost every document I 
write. I would modify numbering styles 1 & 2 to the two schemes 
above, and assign those styles where necessary. This works for me 
everytime, the only manual fiddling I have to do is to restart 
numbering for a certain paragraph if I need it.

I agree that manual formatting on numbered lists can be hard - it 
usually involves
right-click -> Paragraph -> Numbering
and also
right-click -> Numbering/Bullets... -> Numbering Type

which is way to much work for me, hence I use style for this.
