Assuming you have OOo 1.1.4. If not, you need to get that first.
First, you go to http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.4/security_patch.html
There you note which file you need based on what operating system you have:
* Windows: *|sot645mi.dll|* * Linux: *|libsot645li.so|* * Mac OS X (X11): *|libsot645mxp.dylib |* * Solaris x86: *|libsot645si.so|* * Solaris Sparc: *|libsot645ss.so|*
Then, scroll down the page to select a download site. I chose:
U.S.A. FTP pair <ftp://openoffice.mirrors.pair.com/contrib/rc/1.1.4secpatch/> ***
and double clicked on "pair" to get there.
Once there, you'll see a Linux style directory listing of all of the patches.
For Windows, move your mouse to the line that looks like:
-r-- 1 192512 Apr 12 11:05 sot645mi.dll <http://bulkdownloads.digitaldistribution.com/contrib/rc/1.1.4secpatch/sot645mi.dll>
and click on the sot645mi.dll.
That should bring up the download manager in your browser. When it asks you what to do, save the patch to a file (and be sure to remember where you saved it!).
I usually create a Download directory on my disk and create a separate subdirectory for each application such as d:\Downloads\OpenOffice.org
That way, if I need to reinstall something, etc. later I can easily find it again.
Once the file is downloaded, go to the directory where OOo is installed and rename the old file of the same name to something like sot645mi.dll.old <http://bulkdownloads.digitaldistribution.com/contrib/rc/1.1.4secpatch/sot645mi.dll>
Then copy the file you just downloaded to this directory.
This can all be done in Windows Explorer or in a MSDOS prompt window.
I've been using PowerDesk instead of Windows Explorer for so long that I don't remember the specifics.
Once that's done, you should just close OOo and restart it and you're done.
Hope this helps.

I must not be very s-m-a-r-t. I want to download the recommended security patch but when I click on download, I am taken to "where do I want to download from". It doesn't matter which download site I pick, I am taken to the index of the patch. Which directory do I click on and what do I do with it once I click on it?
I switched to IE thinking that Netscape was not supported. Same thing.
Thank you.
