Ok, first off - the macro language that OOo uses is not the same as MS office (VBA). Accordingly if these programs employ alot of macro language (which it sounds like it does) then that will cause the gobblydgook.
OOo typically does things very differently than word... OOo can however import the word file format, but that does not mean that programs such as this will work seamlessly across both word and OOo.
