The spellchecker is broken for all non-US linux users. Even though dictionary installation is successful, users are unable to select the installed language pack. When an installed dictionary is selected, the user's choice is dropped, and the selected language pack remains at the default ... which seems to alternative between US Engligh, UK English and Danish, depending on the build of OOo.

I am using en_AU without problems, but have not tried any non-English dictionaries (1.9.95 on Mandrake 10.1)
One possibility, have you saved your default document template to be the language you want to use?
