There are a number of ways to do this. I would recommend that you have a
look at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/various_topics/Howto_special_char.pdf
to see if any of these methods appeal. There are also a couple of tools
that might also prove useful for you to evaluate:
     1. teh Alt key handlers from
