I downloaded open office and when I try to get into it I get a message

It is highly likely you can't. The file is most probably corrupted while downloading (this happens from time to time).
I'd recommend you download it again. This may be quite troublesome, if you have dialup connections. But these things happen every once in a while in any kind of downloading.
