Hi Peter,
As you're not subscribed to the list you may not have seen this reply:

p.s. support from this list is volunteer based and usually free, but for lawyers, there's an $180 per hour, one hour minimum charge..... :-) just kidding.

Peter,

Highlight the cells you want to reformat into the traditional X,XXX.XX
format. Then go to (click on) the format iten of the menu and pick
cells. You should see that the language is English (South Africa) or
maybe Afrikaans. In several of the langauge versions the format is
the X.XXX,XX form. Change the language to something like English
(USA) or English (UK) and then pick the numerical format in the
window. And you should be good.

I am now using Open Office 1.1.4 and recently received a cd to update my
version and this changed the way my spreadsheets are formatted. The numbers
used to be 13,500.50 and are now reflected as 13.500,00.
The difference is that the decimal point now is a comma and not a full stop (or
period). The latter is easier for me to use as on the number pads the . is more
easily to access than the , which is not on the number pads but with the
letters.

I presume the format can be changed but do not know how to do so.

Thanks for the good software.

Regards
Peter Spence
