Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I got the below mail from Sun and therefore want to address
some problems that I had transferring my 148 page book
containing 130 pictures of a digital camera
from word to Open Office 1.1.3. in january this year.
I have heard that open office would like to be the future
number one program for text editing. So here comes
my report:
The sdw is a 118kB file and I have about 130 external
picture files mainly as jpg in a separate directory.
I would like to direct your attention to
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/OOo1.x.x/user_guide.sxw
THis document contains 439 pages, 70 tables, 342 graphics, 45 OLE
objects and was written with OOo.
So to continue.
so it should be no problem at all for me :-)
_problem 1: _
in comparison to word the time to load is very long.
I can live with this for now, but it is not convenient
because Open Office is the newer software and normally
should perform better than the older one. No big
problem at the moment. :-)
Upgrade to 1.1.4 or 1.1.5.
I did not find 1.1.5. So I did a download of 2
but it seems to be 1.1.4 as indicated by the name
of the file.
I am doing a download now of 1.1.4.
Both load faster than 1.1.3. Also enable the
quickstarter if your system supports this.
I did it. It takes some time for it to load.
But even after it - when I open my text
it will take a very long time.
_problem 2:_
there is page 23 where I cannot move the pictures as I want.
If I made one bigger and afterwards smaller the text would
not move up to the picture again. I tried to solve this several times -
unfortunately without success. I could not find a difference
to the other pictures that worked. May be having a look at
the xml code would be helpful in this case. I did not know
how to procede(sic) with this.
I suspect that the problem is that MSO Word does not anchor graphics
very well. I observed this when using StarOffice4.x and 5.x. The key is
to anchor graphics in OOo rather than depend on Word.
I did all the including of the pictures using OOo.
So this is does not look like a problem related to word.
I also suspect that you forgot to set wrapping to suit the positioning
of the graphic.
Unfortunately I am not a very experienced user with all
the features that the programs offer. I included the file,
so that you can see. If you move the left picture above
the Bild14-line you can see what I mean. If I move the left
one up the right one goes down and if I move then the
right one up, then the text got much space from these pictures.
What is going wrong there?
_problem 3:_
sizing the pictures seems to be less smooth than with word.
It seems to be difficult to get the same height in comparison
with microsoft.
I do not understand this statement. Perhaps you could explain more fully
as I have had no problems sizing.
With sizing I mean clicking on the picture and
then using the mouse on the edges to make it
smaller or bigger. Sometimes it feels very difficult
and even impossible to get both pictures to the same height.
_problem 4:_
sometimes I have two pictures in one line and want to have
only one picture text line belonging to both of them
instead of having 2 lines belonging to each of the pictures.
I tried using one line, but have problems getting a consistent
spacing between line and picture.
If I have 2 pictures the spacing is bigger.
Are you talking about captioning? If yes, then you should know that the
captioning is done with frames and you could insert both graphics into
the same frame.
This sounds well. It would be a solution to do so.
Is there a help how to do this?
I tried it without frames as you can see. And
I got into trouble. I am learning much by looking at
examples. Do you have one for me, where it is done
the correct way?
_problem 5:_
after editing some jpgs in PaintShopPro 5 I was able to
look at them in Irfan, but I was unable to cut them **by opening
the graphics window by a double mouse click. I had to
convert the jpg to the big bmp file format to get this to work.
Another do not understand situation. For one why use JPEG which is a
lossy format rather than one of the lossless formats such as PNG?
Sedcondly, I do not understand the procedure you are using. Please
explain.
I have the original jpeg files from the digital camera.
Do you think it is a good idea to convert all of these
into png before using them? The most easy way seemed
to use the given jpg`s. Is it not possible this way?
_problem 6:_
the export to html works well but the pictures are not shown
as I did cut them.
Please explain.
when I do a double click on one of the pictures
then I can do "Zuschneiden" of the picture on all
4 sides to fokus on something inside.
This focussing does not change the jpg file itself.
The html export does use the original jpg's and
therefore the focussing is lost.
_problem 7:_
the export back to word showed some problems with the
overall page layout. So I could not rework some details
using word.
You must remember that OOo is an Office Suite that happens to handle
files for MSO. The conversion is very good, in my opinion, at about 95%
on both import and export. Not bad considering that these functions were
built without the benefit of a description from MS. I would like to
suggest that exporting to PDF would be a better choice if you are
distributing the document.
I like the pdf export of OOo very much.
I only try to use MS when something does not work
as well.
May be some of these problems have been solved in 1.1.4
or 2 beta, but I had no time to check this yet.
I would really like to use Open Office in the future, but
there are still some draw backs which I hope will be overcome
soon. :-)
I have already suggested that you upgrade to take advantage of the many
fixes et cetera that were part of the 1.1.4 release. 2.0 beta candidates
appear to offer even better MSO compatibility and load speed. Please
take the time to check it out.
Thanks a lot!
Best Regards
