It appears that since my install of the ZoneAlarm Security Suite (ZASS) to
v8.0.015.000,
I am unable to connect with OpenOffice server(s) to check for and have a
successful
update. I install the latest version of ZASS on 9-3-08. I keep getting an
error as shown below.

It appears that ZASS (the latest version) is not allowing me to check for
updates for OpenOffice
v2.4.1. I do get a successful check when I shut-down ZASS. I have also
added the URL of
"update24.services.openoffice.org" to both the Privacy list and the
Firewall as "TRUSTED" but
still cannot connect. For whatever reason, ZASS will not allow me to check
for updates of my
copy of OpenOffice.
I had no problems with OpenOffice and ZASS with the previous version of
ZASS (7.0.483.000).

I don't know if you need to get with ZoneAlarm or not. If I try to contact
them, I may not get
any results other than a "canned" response and something to the effect "it
ain't our problem" (maybe
not in those exact words)! I will make an attempt to contact ZoneAlarm.
Maybe you should check
this out and possibly get with them also.
Let me know if there is any additional info you need. I await your
response.
Thanks.

Subject: Online OpenOffice Updates
Here in the last 2 to 3 days, or so, I have been unable to connect with
your (I assume)
update server to check for updates. I get an notice that my copy of
OpenOffice is unable
to connect to check for updates.

>From my experience, firewall software may ask you for permission every time
a new software on your computer is trying to connect to internet and you
should then grant access to it. You might have missed the dialogue the first
time and select the other option for OO updater. There should be a program
list in ZoneAlarm software which stores all the programs that have tried to
access the internet. You may need to find OO updater there and grant
internet access to it again. Or, if you are not happy with ZoneAlarm, you
may take a look at some other free alternatives, eg. Kerio Personal Firewall
or Comodo Personal Firewall.
Regards.
1. I get the same result using the free ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000 on
Win XP Pro SP3.
2. There is no dialogue to miss.
3. There is no such animal as "OO Updater"; perhaps under a different OS?
4. If I open ZoneAlarm and go to its Program Control menu I find *two*
entries for OpenOffice. Clicking on them in turn shows that one refers
to "soffice.exe" and the other to "soffice.bin". Changing the permission
on this second one to "Allow" in the Internet zone fixes the problem.
Hope this works for you too even though you have a later version than
mine - presumably the free version is deliberately not the latest.
