Dear Collegues,
I loaded a Word doc to Openoffice write that contains Unicode SMP (plane
1) characters. However, the Openoffice displays double-rectangulars, only.
I have Windows XP. I can display the SMP chars by word, however some
features of the Unicode system do not work, e.g. LTO PDf pair.
But the current problem is that the Openoffice 2.4 writer does not
diplay the SMP chars.
I am using Windows XP and OpenOffice.org 2.4.1.
I created a file in OpenOffice.org Writer which contained some SMP
characters, Akkadian cuneiform characters actually, from the Code 2001
font. I saved the file both in .odt and in Microsoft .doc format. Both
files open properly in Writer and the SMP characters appear perfectly.
I then created a file in Microsoft Office 2003, the most recent version
available at work and included some SIMP characters. When I read this
file into OOo Writer, the characters appeared as they ought to.
If you are properly seeing these characters in Microsoft Office on the
same XP machine, then I assume that you must have SMP characters
enabled. They are supposed to be enabled by default in XP, but perhaps
someone disabled them. See http://scholarsfonts.net/Plane1.htm#Windows.
I have been using SMP characters quite often in OpenOffice.org. The only
problem I have encountered is that they often won’t save properly in
Calc’s own format, though they will save properly in Microsoft format.
But I have never had any problems with these characters in OOo Writer
and I don’t see any reason why your system is having difficulties.
Your difficulty very much puzzles me.
