I'm sure this must be an faq, but If want to plot dates along the x-axis, but have the axis display tick marks based on months, how do I do this.
I thought it be a formatting option for the x-axis, but I can't find it.

How is your data arranged? If your data is arranged with a single data value (and chart point) for each month, this is probably easy to arrange. But if you have values for various days within months, this may not make sense. In that case, there would be no individual point along the axis characterised by a particular month: instead a range on this axis would represent each month, and you would probably want the tick marks to appear at the boundaries of those months. And you'd then want the axis labels - the month names - to label the spaces between the ticks rather than the ticks themselves. And I don't see that Calc can do that.

If you have individual data values for months, create your x-values as dates (as you probably already have). You cannot set a date of just "September 2008", of course, but I don't think it matters what date within each month you choose. Then format your date values in the spreadsheet itself appropriately. Go to Format | Cells... | Numbers, select Date under Category, and then choose a suitable date format. You may find one that suits or you can set your own in the "Format code" box at the bottom of the dialogue box. Possibilities are "MMMM", "MMM", or perhaps "MMM YY" or "MMM YYYY". With most chart types, this format will carry over into the axis labelling.

I trust this helps.
