Google is full of links & articles predicting a Thunderbird integration
in 3.0, including this one:
<http://cybernetnews.com/2007/10/13/openoffice-30-wants-to-compete-with-outlook/>

But the reality of the matter is more along these lines:
<http://www.nabble.com/Mozilla-Thunderbird-%2B-Lightning-promotion-on-OO.o-td18088505.html>
[be sure to read page 2 as well]

In the interim, you might want to have a look at the Mail Merge Wizard:
<http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide/E-mailing_Writer_documents>
You can send as plain text, html, MS doc, pdf. Plain text and html will
go into the body of the email the same as if you were using ms word.
