[users] openoffice won't load

I would be grateful for your help. I have made about 10 attempts to  
download openoffice on my  Mac OS X which is using Leopard. Although  
it will down load and appear in both Applications and Desktop, it will  
not open for use. All I get is an xtemp page with the code  
'bash-3.2$'. Originally I downloaded using Safari but, when I became  
aware that that may cause problems, I used Firefox. Still no luck! It  
is very likely my fault but I lack the expertise to sort the problem.
