In addition to Harold's links and suggestions, there is a site with
complete instructions for entering any character in any text editor on
any operating system. The site was designed for linguists who use the
International Phonetic Alphabet, but it also has information for other
special characters. It is an extensive site which explains the subject
thoroughly, including all the optional ways of using special characters:
