All good points & thanks for posting your findings. Given that OOo is
very much driven by Sun and other developers, I should think that your
participation in the OOo projects will be welcome. Please have a look at:

http://projects.openoffice.org/index.html

and find 1 or more that you think you can help with. Even if you don't
take on a project status, you should at least review the projects mail
lists and participate in those that are of interest to you.

For instance, you might paticipate in the Bibliographic project/mail list:
http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/
  http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList

I'd also suggest looking up issues that you mention (eps for instance)
on the OOo Issue Tracker. Example:
<http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/servlets/Search?artifact=issuezilla+issue&query=eps&resultsPerPage=40&scope=domain>
[With a little practice you can learn to refine the searches to search
by release etc.]
Once you've found an issue(s) that is of interest to you, _participate_
in the issue by adding comments, testing, confirming, voting, etc. You
never know, you may just help resolve an issue.
