x^1 is x.

x^-1 is 1/x, except for x=0, which is illegal.

x^(1 + -1) is x * 1/x, which is 1, except for x=0, which is illegal.

0^0 is illegal. Otherwise, x^0 is 1.

Damn! I've been retired too long and I'm losing it. You're right about x^0 of course but your example of x^(1 + -1) doesn't look right. x^(1 + -1) reduces to x^0 not x * 1/x.

Have you also forgotten how logarithms work?
