GRS,
thanks for the input. pkgchk sounds like a linux only
deals. i run winxp. will cygwin help here? i use
cygwin to run pgsql on my dev box. my webhost runs
linux, but that is transparent to me.
doug, i will agree that this "solution" is similar to
the patch. you do know some folks do stop smoking
with the patch, right? isn't that *the point*?
while you don't care b/c it doesn't effect you, others
won't take that view. especially corporate types who
are *terrified* of being *different* and having it
blow up on them.
they have, say, 5,000 MSO documents residing on their
company's computers. their marketing department works
with many companies that are quite happy with MSO.
i'm trying to use OOo almost exclusively in a MSO
environment. this works great until i need to send
someone an MSO document. do i save it as .doc? if i
do, then i don't have the native format and i've set
myself up to use OOo as a replacement .doc editor and
viewer, haven't i?
just like the patch, though, maybe another couple
people in the office go with OOo. under the patch
scenario, if i have to share files, i won't be sending
them .doc files. i can send the native format.
maybe ten years from now, 95% of company docs will be
native OOo format (with the help of the patch) instead
of everyone passing around .doc files on OOo (no
patch, no time to convert 300 documents from .doc,
etc... to native format).
are you going to begrudge the guy who stopped smoking
with the help of the patch b/c he didn't go cold
turkey? or are you going to be happy the guy is
healthier b/c he used the patch?
i agree it isn't ideal, but much of life isn't ideal.
for those that don't see the value, they are not
required to use the function. but don't assume others
might not see the value just b/c you don't.
i could ask 100 people at work about OOo and not one
will know what it is (except the linux IT contractor
:-)... unless i've already told them about it.
that's the environment where this kind of thing can
add value.
i don't see it adding value to you in your circumstance.
