hmmm - well there is another way you might find less confusing.

With the form open in design mode ensure that the 'form design' toolbar is 
open. ("View>Toolbars>Form Design" if needed ) On this toolbar you will find 
the tool button 'Form navigator', fifth button from the left, this will list 
all the controls on the form for in a tree view style. You can select your 
control from this list and open the property editor also.
