[users] Two different OOorg versions on same Linux machine?

I'm currently working with OOorg v 2.2. Because some of its features are 
not working well (.doc to .org conversion, mail merge wizard, ...) I'd 
like to try out OOrg v. 3.0,  so I've downloaded the tarball from OO's 
website.
My question: can I install 3.0 so it won't interfere with my current 2.2 
and if so, how should I go about it?
