Ok, I've tried it bit it didn't change a thing.
I have a suspicion this is something specific to 2.4 - I did an
upgrade at some point, and remember running into this detach problem
then.
Apologies for talking to myself in public - I've done some googling, and
have spotted the problem with this detach stuff. If oosplash.bin
exists, the soffice script will run that first, and that's where the
detach happens. On my server, I can't see a need for having
oosplash.bin, so I just moved to oosplash.bin.disabled, which did the
trick!
Using -invisible and -display with Xvfb running is still twice as fast
as with -headless.
