Be aware that the available characters that generate a vertical line do not necessarily translate well between environments, if that is any concern. (|, AKA "pipe", on Windows environment doesn't consistently translate to EBCDIC or *nix environments, for example; the "broken pipe" character requires ALT-code or other non-keyboard methods of entry.)
For your request, a drawn line / graphic does sound like the most likely portable solution (and the least likely to be impacted by changes in style / font / character set).
