By default, OpenOffice saves files in the ISO standard Open Document
Formats (ODF), which Microsoft Office doesn't understand.  You'll have
to save in Microsoft Office formats (.DOC, .XLS etc).  You can do this
when you use "Save as", by selecting the appropriate file type, from the
drop down list. Also, ensure automatic file name extenstion is enabled. 
Another way is to email directly from OpenOffice, by clicking on File >
Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word etc.

You can also suggest they install OpenOffice or the Sun ODF plugin,
which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office.
