As to your problem, by default, OpenOffice saves files in the ISO standard ODF file formats, which Microsoft Office does not understand. I assume those other people are using Microsoft Office. So, you'll have to save or email your documents in MS office format. You can do this in "Save as" by selecting the appropriate file format from the drop down list. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected. You can also email directly from OpenOffice by clicking on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word etc.
