Hi,
thank you for your hints how to improve the application help.
The help has a page called "Defining Different Headers and Footers". You can find that page from the Index entry "page styles; changing". There are no links from the OOo "sections" help pages to the topic of page styles, because the OOo sections are very different from the Microsoft Word sections - OOo sections do not affect page styles, headers and footers at all. If you look at the help index "Microsoft Office" you find some help pages titled "Comparing Microsoft Office and OOo Terms" and "Using Microsoft Office and OOo", to name just two of the pages. The help page named "Inserting Sections" has no information about page styles. Please tell us where you found that misleading information so we can change that.

UWe,

After some 8 hours of messing around I can't remember where I saw it. I think, however, that a "Note" might be placed in the Help sections for Sections and Headers for MSO users that they should use Page Styles for headers & footers, not OOo Sections as in MSO. After all, the overwhelming majority of your users will have come from this environment and if they, like myself at that point, haven't made the mental switch from sections to page styles yet, they are dead meat.

Also, in the "About Headers and Footers" help section you have this line:
a.. To use different headers or footers in your document, you must add them to different Page Styles, and then apply the styles to the pages where you want the headers or footer to appear.

I would add another line to the effect that to change headers/footers at the current point in the text, create a new Page Style, if not already defined, and then do a Manual Insert of a page break with the new style selected.

That simple addition would have saved me countless hours of work.

Right now I am totally buried but when I get a chance I will play with a test document to get more comfortable with playing with page styles.

Jerry

In my case all the sections already existed because the document was originally converted from MS Word
