How can I change a power point presentation to be opened by Impress? Or
can it be done automatically? Tks

Hello,

Impress can read, edit, save and play Powerpoint presentations, in the
opposite direction you have to save your work as ppt in order for MS
Powerpoint to recognise your file.
I suppose Impress now also handles ppsx files, but I haven't tested that.

I just downloaded an Advent calender from MS for the PowerPoint 2007.
I opened it up with OOo 3.x. There was a little formatting alignment
issues, but it was readable. The link below is to the original download
place. The file had many, many images.

So to answer your question; Yes OOo 3.x Presentation can open
MS Power Point 2007 files, but it may have alignment issues.

As a side note;
MS Office 2003 with the compatibility package that allows PowerPoint 2003
to read PowerPoint 2007 files ALSO has the same alignment issues.

So, OO0 3.x opens those files as well as MS's own software does.
