OK, there is part of the difference. I never start the Welcome screen.
I just launch the app that I need, which is Writer 99% of the time.

When I first tried 3.0 the Welcome screen came up and I instantly
didn't like it. I know a lot of people wanted it for years, but it
seemed pointless to me to have to click twice to launch Writer.
Furthermore, there is a bug that makes Writer not know its last window
size and position when you launch it from the Welcome screen, whereas
it does launch in the same window size and position it was last in if
you launch it directly.

I should add one more problem that I forgot to mention. I prefer to
have all the toolbars floating off to the side of the Writer window
because it leaves more space in the document window for the document.
If I have Writer running and I minimize it to the panel the toolbars
remain on the desktop. Also, sometimes I can no longer restore the
document window to the desktop.
