I don't dispute that there are bugs in 3.0.0, although not to the degree
you are suggesting.
When OpenOffice.org 3.0.0 was released there seemed to me to be
sufficient bugs reported that I did not install it on all our machines
at work. I do have it installed on my own machine. I don't know exactly
how you are measuring “degree”.
Here you appear to be claiming the existence of a
bug that I cannot find.
Based on your email header, I am guessing you are running under Windows.
So I fired up a Win XP Pro SP3 box and loaded OOO300m9(Build:9358). I
saved a Writer document with the "Save As..." option, ticked the "Save
with password" checkbox, entered to password & confirmation. Closing and
reopening the password protected file, was not a problem. This does not
seem to be any different from what I used to do with any of the 2.x.x
versions. Have I misunderstood your example, or are you using a
different build?
See issue 92684 at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=92684 .
I discovered this at home on my Vista machine when a user asked about it
in another forum. I had not noticed this bug previously. I downloaded
the 3.0.1 release candidate and the bug was fixed. I suggested that the
user download and install either 3.0.1 release candidate or version
2.4.2. The user confirmed that downloading 2.4.2 fixed his problem.
You say "It is well known that version 3.0.0 is more buggy". I have been
closely following the posts to this and other OOo related lists for many
years, but, with the exception of the crash recovery issue, I haven't
seen anyone reporting any regression bugs in 3.0.0 that would be show
stoppers for the everyday user.
What exactly is a show-stopper? What one person considers a
show-stopper may be a minor issue of little consequence for another.
What is an “everyday user”?
The user who asked this question was asking about it for installation on
all machines in his business. I don’t think that is an “everyday user”.
You may.
The crash recovery issue is show-stopper for some users. In any case,
version 2.4.2 seems to me to be more stable than 3.0.0 (albeit less
powerful). Version 3.0.1, a bugfix release, should also be more stable.
Some people here think this should not be told to users.
If I am wrong on this point, would you
be kind enough to point me to a couple of these "well known" issues in
the QA project.
See http://development.openoffice.org/releases/3.0.1rc1.html for a
number of issues. Whether you consider these important enough to keep
you clients on 2.4.2 until 3.0.1 comes out is your call.

This is a genuine request, because I recently moved a couple of my
important customers from 2.x.x over to 3.0.0 So if there are any serious
regression bugs I have missed, I would like to be ready for any
complaints I may get.
