Thanks, Gary. The "oofice -writer" command also shows the splash
screen briefly, then disappears and nothing else. I must ^C to get my
terminal back, as it keeps running.

I removed OOo 2.4 before installing 3.0. Would it be advisable to
install 2.4 and _then_ install 3.0?
