I'd like to add that it's not easy to find where to download the PPC (non-Intel) version of OpenOffice.org 3. For some reason, it's not listed on the downloads page at OOo (only 2.4.0 is listed for PPC).

I need to ask "Why is this so"?

Several reasons.

First: Sun only began officially supporting OO.o on Macs after the transition was made by Apple to Intel processors. Their developers only have Intel machines since PPC Macs are no longer made and they can only do official builds for Intel Macs. PPC Mac builds are available from Maho on the good-day site.
<http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/>

Second: Each new version of OO.o in each lanquage has to pass the QA process before it is listed on the official download page. There are currently listings of Mac PPC 3.0 for Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Swedish. <http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US>

There is a lack of people doing QA work, especially for Mac PPC. If you want to get involved see <http://qa.openoffice.org/>

I too have a PPC Mac and have had to locate the ooopackages, which are
not easy to find (at OpenOffice.org main web pages).

Full information on OO.o for Macs is available at the project page.

Has OOo decided not to support PPC Mac at all? If so, I think that this
lack of support is "untimely". Apple still supports the PPC Macs for the
meantime and I think that OOo should do the same at least as long as
support for this architecture is still coming from Apple.

OO.o still supports PPC Macs. However, since new PPC Macs are unavailabe, only developers who already own them can do PPC Mac specific work.

I currently run OOo 3.0.1 (RC2) for PPC and I can say that it runs very
well indeed on this Mac.

Glad to hear that. There were some reports of PPC owners having problem with OO.o 3.0.0
