Hi all, Thanks for some useful responses. I think I will move /opt to /usr/local/opt for the moment, and next time I blitz the system I will make /usr/local partition a little larger and still have /opt tucked in there and add the symlink. Making /usr/local a separate partition is a Slackware idea, and it makes a lot of sense. If I want to do a clean install of a later distro then I can leave /home and /usr/local alone and just format the / and /usr partitions. That way, netscape, acrobat and a rack of other external programs do not need to be reloaded (as in Windoze).
I am still trying to find the last traces of the aborted rpm install, but I will move /opt as above and try the rpm install again, maybe it will work since it will not need the --prefix command.
