As a person that is/was required to have MS Office to do his client
work, I can safely say that over 99% of the things that I had to do
using MS Office, I now do with OpenOffice.org. I currently use version
3.0.1, but I have used it for many years. I was using 1.x till 2.x came
out and then upgraded to 3.0.0 this past October.
The one "funny" thing I have found is that OOo 3.x.x reads the .docx
format better than MS Word 2003 with the MS file format compatibility
pack add on. I encourage everyone to not use the .docx format and stick
with the more standardize .doc format. That said, I encourage everyone

is OpenOffice.org.
When "everyone" had Office/Word 2000, they had to pay for the 2003
upgrade. Then later they were told they must have version 2007. Then
again they had to pay for the new software version. With
OpenOffice.org, you never have to pay for upgrades to the next newest
version. Free, except the time it takes to download it.
October 13th was the introduction to version 3.0.0, and then a few
weeks ago 3.0.1 came out. In about 60 days, the major upgrade
version 3.1 will be ready for download, adding "hundreds of features",
so I have been told. MS would charge you for those new features.
OpenOffice.org does not.
That all said.
I use Openoffice.org to do my work, then I save them as OOo's default
formats, which saves disk space. If I have a client that still uses
MS Office, then I save a copy as Word's, Excel's, or PowerPoint's 2003
format, depending on the need. I rarely use MS's Office product anymore.
I even download MS's template files and use them with OpenOffice.org.
So use Openoffice.org.
Tell your friends and people who send you "Word" files to send them
to you as .doc files instead of the .docx format. Even MS may be
dropping that format in their next version of Word. Besides, too
many people cannot read that buggy .docx format anyways.
Then, once you use OpenOffice.org long enough, give your friends
and family a copy of it for them to try. Get them hooked as well.
I did this. Friends, Family, Businesses, Non-profit Organizations,
etc., are not using OOo as their default programs. Those who use to
send my .doc files, not send me .odt files instead. Much smaller
files. Also as a perk, OOo will export to PDF natively. But, if you
prefer to use a "printer" version of PDF, you can install doPDF. Either
way, you then can send them your files, with the needed embedded fonts,
to your friends without having to spend any money buying Adobe's
Acrobat PDF "printer". Both the PDF export and doPDF works better
than Acrobat. I should know since I use to have Acrobat (which really
was bad in Vista).

I think that this is the best "sales talk" for OOo that i have read for
a long time.
Do you mind if i print it out, and show it to everyone that is in doubt
if they should abandon MS and try to use OOo??
