The first text box (refer to the link PJH provided). For some
reason, no matter the version of Word used to save the doc, OOo
opens with 4 graphics, 4 'Resident Handbook' text boxes, 4 '2009'
text boxes, plus 4 blank frames.
You will know that the .doc format allows editing amendments to be
added to the end of a document file instead of being applied to it,
and that Word performs these "fast saves" by default instead of
rewriting the file properly. Is it possible that the OpenOffice
input filter is failing properly to sort out the effect of these
amendments on the document content? If so, a workaround would be to
ask the author to do a Save As... to a new file name in Word, which
causes Word to perform a garbage collection. This is anyway probably
good practice before sending documents to others, as it will
generally reduce the size of the file.

The Save As did not help.
