I often need to use bracket formulas in OOo 3.01 on Ubuntu Intrepid.
There is an example here:

You can also download an OOo Writer document from there that contains
the sample bracket.

The problem is that the brackets and the text in the formula print
fainter than the rest of the page. I have three laser printers, each of
which has PostScript as well as PCL drivers, and I get the same results
regardless of which of the six drivers I use. When I export to PDF the
bracket fomula appears faint in the PDF file on screen as well, and
when I print the PDF file I get the same faint printout.

I also still have 2.4.1 installed and I get the same results from it as
from 3.01.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is there a workaround?

Bring up the formula editor and then menu Format>Fonts. You can now use the Modify button to select Bold for any of the 4 categories under Formula fonts. Setting it for Text seems to fix the problem.
