To be honest you would probably be better using calc (spreadsheet) and
then linking/inserting into writer the resulting table. Spreadsheets
are more suited to sorting the type of data that it seems your working
with.

However back to your specific issue...

I can't really follow what your trying to do with the tables. If there
is a way that you can create something that you want to do with writer
I can have a look (attachments don't get sent to the list, so you'll
have to use my actual email address).

Yes, Beta 2.0 has better functions around tables. It supports tables
in tables and other such functionality.  You can download it from here
: http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html

Keep in mind however that Version 2.0 is still beta and not ready for
production use.  Use at your own discretion.
