The major players are:
* Fraunhofer Society of Germany,
* Alcatel-Lucent
* Philips Applied Technology / Royal Philips Electronics
* Thompson

There are also a couple of other minor players in the game.

If one fails to pay the royalties to any of those companies, or half a
dozen that have been formed since 2000, one runs the risk of being
sued for patent infringement.

Hopefully the US Supreme Court will fully overturn State Street, and
then declare that all software related patents issued prior to the
date of its ruling are invalid.(In the case of MP3, all of the patents
are either mathematical algorithms, and as such not  patentable, or
based on prior published art, or, more commonly, both.
