In response to my enquiry, Michael Adams wrote ....
Tried %epsilon %EPSILON?
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0111GS-GettingStartedWithMath.pdf
I was using %epsilon .... but the documentation reference led me to the
catalog of symbols and I found that %varepsilon gives me what I am
looking for.
Thank you very much
Ian
