Which version of OOo are you using? Which flavour of which operating system?
What *exactly* happens (especially the precise text of any error
messages you get) when you can't re-open a saved document?
If the Word documents were saved in ".docx" (Word 2007) format *and* you
are using a version of OOo before 3.0 then you won't be able to open them.
