The 1st thing that comes to mind is that you're a) running Windows and b) forgot the file extensions. In OpenOffice, you can enable automatic file name extensions, when you use "Save as". If this is the cause of the problem, you should be able to open those other files, by renaming them to add the appropriate extenion. You can also simply start OOo first and then open the desired file with it.
