I spent 10 minutes scrolling through the thousands of characters in the font I am using (Junicode). I found that character FF0E (thats eff-eff-zero-ee) works perfectly. This character is a dot, but evidently was designed with a wide left bearing. When I set Tabs > Character to FF0E it appears perfect.
