The situation: a hierarchical index (table of contents) of manuals:
1. "Widgets" [Manual 1]
1.1 "Widgets overview" [Manual 1, Chapter 1]
1.1.a. "Widget arms" [Manual 1, Chapter 1, Section a]
...
for which the content only (that which is enclosed in quotation marks above)
- but *not* the hierarchy information - must be copied to a table in which
paper index tab labels are printed for the manuals. The problem: I cannot
find a way to Copy/Paste (including Paste Special) the text from the
hierarchical index data. Even though only the text after the numbering is
highlighted for the Copy, the numbering comes along to the Paste into the
table. And then, even after spurious hierarchical numbers are deleted,
hierarchical format artifacts remain in /some/ [not all - where is Reveal
Codes when you need it? ;-)] of the table cells. For example, even after
deleting the hierarchical numbers, the Status Bar shows the following
information for the columns in the first row:
Table1:A1 Table1:B1 Table1:C1:Level 1 Table1:D1
(This is curious not only because C1 is the only cell (of four) in the first
row to be so affected, but because its text was not at Level 1 in the table
of contents hierarchy from which it was copied.)
Setting aside the bonus question of why only some cells are affected
(though, if you have an answer to that, I would welcome it), how can I avoid
carrying any hierarchy information from table of contents to the
non-hierarchical table of paper labels?
Bonus question: Is there a quick way to automate this process? [I could not
find a macro way to "walk" the hierarchy and transfer its data to the labels
table.]
